How to Prepare for Your Tattoo Appointment

Looking for tips to prepare for your upcoming tattoo? I’ve got you covered.

Getting a tattoo can be exciting, nerve-wracking, and it makes sense to want to be as ready as possible for your new artwork and investment. There’s not a lot you need to do, but here are some tips for your best possible appointment.

Take Care of Your Body

Eating nutritious, filling food helps regulate your blood sugar and keep you comfortable throughout your session. In the days leading up to your appointment, take care to eat a nourishing diet. Make sure to sleep as well as possible the night before, too!

Prepare Your Skin

Ahead of your appointment, make sure to avoid sunburn (always, but especially before and directly after a tattoo), stay hydrated, exfoliate well, and moisturize. The healthier your skin, the easier it is to tattoo. Make sure to shower ahead of your appointment.

Bring What You Need

You probably won’t need much, but everyone is different! Many studios, mine included, offer snacks to clients, but you may want to bring anything you feel you need to ensure you have it handy. If you run cold, or if you’re getting tattooed in colder months, bring a large scarf or wrap in case you get chilly. If you enjoy fidget toys, some clients like to bring them along. Headphones, books, and chewing gum are all common tools as well.

Dress for The Occasion

Stretchy, black layers are ideal. Ink can splatter and you don’t want to stain your favorite white shirt! Additionally, you want to ensure your clothing can move around easily, and you should be as comfortable as possible. Bringing extra layers in case you move your tattoo’s placement may be helpful too. Better to be prepared!

Show Up Sober

Only take medication that has been prescribed by your doctor, and make sure to show up without any mind altering substances in your system.

Be Careful to Read Instructions

Your tattoo artist may require a certain form of payment, need a digital consent form filled out ahead of time, or have other specifications. Be sure to read everything your artist sends your way!

All in all, there’s not a lot you need to do to prepare for your tattoo, but these tips will ensure the best possible outcome. If you want tips for taking care of your tattoo after it’s done, visit my Aftercare page.
